The location of the Guggenheim Museum in Urdaibai in Murueta is not welcomed by those involved in the listening process
Similarly, the opinions received agree that there has been insufficient information on the project, two of the conclusions of the active listening process promoted by the Bizkaia Council and the Government on the Guggenhiem Urdaibai project among the citizens of Busturialdea.
The debate on the expansion of the Guggenheim Museum in Urdaibai continues. The Government and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, which promoted an active listening process for citizens to express their views freely, and the first conclusions of this process today have made it clear that the location of the Guggenheim Museum in Murueta generates "great unease " not only among the citizens who oppose it, but also among those who support its construction.
Gorka Espiau Agirre, director of the Lehendakaria Center, has stated that participation is being "very pluralistic and very active". Urte the process will continue until the end, but the 500 interviews that have already been conducted by the Agirre Lehendakari Center have shown that the project's location, where the shipyard is located.
Lehendakari Aguirre Center concludes that Murueta is considered an area of high symbolic value by both supporters and opponents of the museum, so Espiau says it is necessary to rethink the location, dimension and character of the museum.
Lack of information
The report has also shown that when formulating strategic projects of this kind, citizens demand information and transparency from institutions.
"Those who are in favour and against, and especially those who have not expressed a specific opinion, believe that they do not have the necessary information," said the director of the centre Agirre, adding that the citizens are asking the Basque institutions to share this information in real time.
With the publication of the first conclusions, the hearing process will be extended until December. The Lehendakari Agirre Center plans to conduct a total of 1,000 interviews and expects a final report by the beginning of the year. In any case, the "listening process", which allows contradictions to be seen in different positions, is not binding and it is up to the institutions to assess the opinions received and make the decisions they want.
