The wildlife recovery center in Gorliz has killed all the birds in the farm, and preventive measures have been put in place in neighbouring municipalities
The centre has detected two cases of avian influenza, which has led to the announcement that the centre itself has been infected, killing on the one hand all the birds in the farm and on the other hand imposing preventive measures on the surrounding municipalities.
The two cases of avian influenza detected at the last minute have been detected at the wildlife recovery centre in Gorliz, and this Tuesday it was reported that the Centre itself has been infected, resulting in "immediate euthanasia"for all native birds.
Noting that the cases of seagulls with avian influenza are not "unforeseen" and that there is no risk to humans, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia has specified that, in addition to killing birds, it is "necessary" to take preventive measures for birds within a 10-kilometre radius . This measure, as indicated by the Council, will be in force within 30 days of the elimination of the focus.
The protection and surveillance zones established affect the municipalities of Lemoiz, Bakio, Gorliz, Barrika, Sopela, Mungia, Maruri, Plentzia, Urduliz, Getxo, Berango, Gatika, Laukiz, Leioa, Erandio, Loiu and Derio.
These measures are as follows:
- All farms containing birds shall be registered in the Register of Livestock Holdings.
- Freezing of poultry farms and the entry and exit of birds from the protection and surveillance zone is prohibited.
