The UN calls on Israel to investigate allegations of torture in an "impartial" and "effective" manner
The UN document states that Israeli domestic legislation does not contain instruments criminalizing the crime of torture. Moreover, in accordance with the so-called "defence of the state of necessity", the police and military forces may be relieved of their responsibility despite the use of violence during interrogations.
The United Nations Committee against Torture has urged Israel to set upa commission of inquiry into the significant increase in torture against Palestinians since 7 October 2023.
"The Commission is seriously concerned with the data from the reports showing a significant increase in cases of organized torture and ill-treatment," the UN said in a statement.
In addition, the UN document considers that Israeli domestic legislation lacks instruments to criminalize the crime of torture. Moreover, the UN accuses the State of Israel of using "special means" to interrogate prisoners it does not know publicly.
Finally, the Commission has denounced that, "in the occupied Palestinian territory", Israeli policies apply "cruel, inhuman or degrading living conditions"to citizens\u00A0 , according to the testimonies contained in the allegations.
