The Supreme Court, in a final order of 11 June, has dismissed the appeal of cassation filed by the ABRA (Association of Rioja Alavesa Wineries) against the judgement of the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country of 5 November 2024, which proved the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin of Rioja right and prevented the creation of the "Vineyards of Álava".
The Designation of Origin of La Rioja has revealed that the Supreme Court is based on two grounds for ruling: on the one hand, that the ABRA has not justified the violation of the legal system by the judgment handed down by the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country, and, on the other, that it considers that there is no interest in cassation and that the Supreme Court itself must make a decision.
The Supreme Court has also reported on the allegations made by the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country that the use or alleged notoriety of wines known as Vineyards of Álava is not proven, "nor is there any reality other than that of wines of the Rioja Alavesa of the Qualified Designation of Origin, so that if the initiative were successful, it would have misled consumers".
Therefore, after nine years, the whole process resulting from this initiative ends once and for all, since, without knowing who was really interested in this initiative, "it has seriously damaged the Qualified Designation of Origin Rioja and its inscriptions, brand and image".
The Regulatory Council, in addition to "deploring the injustice caused and the sterile dedication to this matter", recalls the opportunities offered by La Rioja to all its operators and again calls for "aligning interests, joining forces and expanding the full potential of the Designation".
