The tunnel under the Lamiako River will link Portugalete with the Leioa River to bean alternativeto the Rontegi Bridge : work will begin in the first half of 2026 and will have an overall budget of EUR 543 million.
The General Representative of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, has presented the project for the construction of the tunnel under the river, approved by the Governing Council of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.
The Deputy General has indicated that the four lots in which the works have been divided will be put out to tender in the coming months and excavations will begin in the first half of 2026within 74 months.
The overall budget is EUR 543 million, 'a solid but fully justified investment', since the construction of the tunnel will contribute EUR 290 million to the Bizkaia Gross Added Value and will contribute to the creation or maintenance of 4,300 jobs.
The underground route will connect the roundabouts of Artatza (Leioa) and Ballonti (Portugalete) in just four minutes, thanks to a 3.2 km tunnel route and another 2 km underground access to relieve saturated axes such as the Rontegi Bridge in Barakaldo, the Avanzada Bridge and the A-8 motorway.
During the hearing, Etxanobe argued that the tunnel under the river "is neither a whim nor an idea" and is "a necessity" for the territory.
