Petronor and O.C.O. Technology's synthetic arid plant at the Port of Bilbao will be operational in 2026
The project, which began construction in 2024, will become the first industrial plant in mainland Europe to manufacture synthetic arid, which captures CO2 both during the production process and during its useful life.
Construction of the Biscay Eco Aggregates factory in the port of Bilbao.
The Biscay Eco Aggregatesplant in the Port of Bilbao, Petronor and the synthetic eco-dryness plantpromoted by O.C.O Technology, will be launched in 2026. The project has an investment of 20 million euros and, once the civil works phase has been completed, the assembly of the equipment
According to Petronor in a statement, the project began construction in 2024 and will become the first industrial plant in continental Europe to manufacture synthetic arid, a material that captures CO2 both in the production process and in useful life.
To finance the project, Kutxabank has signed a loan of EUR 11.5 million on September 2; "great financial support," Petronor stressed.
Biscay Eco Aggregates has as shareholders Petronor (75%) and the British company O.C.O. Technology (25%), and the factory will be located at the AZ1 pier in the Port of Bilbao.
During the manufacturing process, the new plant uses captured CO2 to treat waste, preventing it from ending up in landfills (contrary to what has been done so far), which will reduce CO2 emissions, including waste, through material recovery.
The synthetic is an artificial limestone arid that is used as a raw material for incineration and CO2 waste, and continues to capture atmospheric CO2 even after production, thus replacing natural arid, which has been presented as "an example of a circular economy that will reduce CO2 emissions and also waste through material recovery," Petronor said.
Among 232 proposals, the project was selected in 2021 to participate in the Innovation Fund Small Scale, which subsidizes projects of innovative technologies with low carbon emissions, with an endowment of 3.2 million, and is part of the Indartu programme, from which it receives 1,160,000 euros.
