Bilbao will be declared a high-voltage zone this Thursday
Last April the Bilbao City Council sent the Basque Government its request to declare the entire city a tense area due to the difficulties of citizens in paying for housing.
The Housing Department of the Basque Government will today declare Bilbao an area of great tension at an official event to be held at the City Hall, which will be attended by, among others, theMayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, and the Housing and Urban Agenda Counsellor, Denis Itxaso.
In statements made yesterday, the mayor stressed that the declaration of a tense area will be "one more step" in addressing the housing problem. He acknowledged that "it is not the solution", but said that with this step he wants citizens in general and young people in particular to have more affordable housing , whether on rent or property.
Along with that, he added, it will pave the way for curbing the rise in rental prices in recent years.
