Bizkaia pharmacies join the socio-health problem detection program
The agreement between pharmacies and EUDEL is already in force in Álava and Gipuzkoa, and the Bizkaia batutas, the network of cooperation between pharmacies and municipal social services, have been formed to provide service to the entire population of the CAPV.
Juan Uriarte (COFBi) and Esther Apraiz (EUDEL), during the signing of the agreement.
The Bizkaia College of Pharmacists (COFBi) and the Association of Basque Municipalities (Eudel) have signed an agreement for the implementation of a programme to detect social and health problems from Bizkaia pharmacies that can be dealt with by municipal social services, such as cases of male violence or loneliness.
This agreement is already in force in Álava and Gipuzkoa, and together with Bizkaia, a network of cooperation between pharmacies and municipal social services is formed to cover the entire population of the CSC.
This agreement establishes coordination mechanisms between the network of community pharmacies and social services , in addition to agreeing on guidelines and criteria for intervention and improving cooperation between pharmacies and municipalities, Eudel reports.
The network of community pharmacies in Bizkaia consists of 439 establishments, 149 of which are located in Bilbao.
Pharmacies, in addition to providing information , shall encourage persons to turn to the relevant social services or, failing that, and always with the prior consent of the person, the pharmacy shall request an appointment or contact the municipal social services directly.
Among the situations to be considered are those of loneliness, persons who, for any reason, have little or no social and family network and may be in a situation of social isolation, as well as those who lose their personal autonomy or may be in a situation or risk of dependency , in particular those who do not adequately meet their cognitive impairment, functional limitations, nutritional and hygiene problems or basic needs.
Situations of overload and despair of caring families, as well as cases of male or domestic violence, as well as inadequate treatment or ill-treatment of older persons, shall also be reported.
Esther Apraiz, President of the Association of Eudel, highly appreciates the signing of an agreement to "achieve greater and better access from the network of socio-health public resources in the territory to the people who need our help."
Apraiz has stressed that "pharmacies become basic allies in the social services of municipalities, which are the gateway to the Basque system of resources and benefits. All the municipalities of Bizkaia have a pharmacy that will be the radar for detecting the socio-health needs of our citizens."
The president of the College of Pharmacists, Juan Uriarte, has stressed that the network of community pharmacies in Bizkaia is "a fundamental gateway to the health system, especially because of its capillary, proximity and confidence in the population" and has stressed that the agreement "strengthens the pharmacy's commitment to its social dimension/orientation".
