The number of online players in Spain has increased by more than 20% in 2024 due to the 'welcome bonuses'
The Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 has pushed for an amendment to the next Customer Service Act to include the ban on so-called 'welcome bonds'.

The number of online players inSpain increased by 21.63% in 2024, according to the Report on the Activity of the Game in Spain 2024, promoted by the Directorate-General for the Organization of the Game and validated in July by the plenary of the Gambling Policy Council.
This was reported on Monday by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, which attributed the increase to the recovery of of the 'welcome bonds'offered by betting houses, which serve as incentives to attract players and were banned until April 2024, when a Supreme Court ruling annulled several articles of Royal Decree 958/2020, which, among other things, restricted the use of these incentives.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs also points out that last year there were more than 450,000 new players (459,266) compared to 2023, and that the number of active players was around 2 million (1,991,550). In addition, 8 out of 10 players are men (83.15% compared to 16.85% of women) and 85.70% ofactive players are between 18 and 45 years of age.
The amounts played increased by 7.1% in 2024. The state-licensed online games made a profit of €1,454 million and are distributed as follows: €730.71 million in casino; €608.85 million in betting; €100.08 million in poker; and €14.94 million in bingo.
Of these gaming segments, online betting was where profits for operators increased most in 2024, 23.80% growth compared to 2023. Profits for operators also increased in the online casino segment, 16.96%, driven mainly by random machines. Online bingo also increased profits by 3.96%, while online poker profits fell by 4.99%.
The report also shows that the monthly average of active accounts increased by 23.48 per cent in 2024, i.e. an average of beste 1,433,715 active accounts per month, as well as an increase in the average of new monthly accounts (+34.73 per cent), with an average of 151,898 new accounts per month.
In this context, the Ministry headed by Pablo Bustinduy has pushed for an amendment to the Customer Service Act to prohibit 'welcome bonds'.
