French Prime Minister Bayrou loses confidence motion and must resign
The French National Assembly has voted against a motion of confidence against Prime Minister François Bayrou , forcing the centrist politician to resign and leaving President Emmanuel Macron to the challenge of appointing his fifth prime minister.
The government's decline comes at a delicate time for France, where political tensions are mounting and the European Union's 3% ceiling is doubling with public deficits. Public debt has alreadyreached 114% of GDP, and the country is under pressure from financial markets and credit rating agencies.
Bayrou, 74, unexpectedly asked for a vote of confidence to support the € 44 billion savings plan in the 2026 budgets, reduce the deficit and stabilize the debt. The opposition , however, has rejected the proposal. A total of 364 MPs have opposed confidence ,with 194k support.
