Male violence is "normalized" in the Basque audiovisual and performing arts sectors
(H) A study promoted by the Emen Association and the Union of Basque Actors (EAB) shows that in the audiovisual and performing arts sectors "male violence is not the result of isolated cases, but of a systemic reality related to the structure of the sector".
The Association Emen(H) and the Union of Basque Actors (EAB) are putting the finishing touches to the Protocol for the Prevention and Combating of Male Violence in the Audiovisual and Performing Arts Sectors, which is expected to be ready by April and which is intended to be established in collaboration with the various actors in these sectors.
\u00For the final work of the Multimedia Communication Master of the UPV/EHU and EITB, the protocol has taken into consideration the "thorough research and diagnostic work" carried out by Garazi Arregi, led by professors Tania Arriaga and Itxaso del Castillo.
For the diagnosis, Arregi has collected the testimoniesof 90 audiovisual and performing arts professionals from the Basque Country through surveys and has also used five in-depth interviews and group dynamics to collect contributions from professionals from different profiles.
Systemic reality
The study shows that male violence "is not the result of isolated cases", but "the structure of the sector, its hierarchies and the systemic realityassociated with power relations ".
The testimonies collected show that many professionals do not have their workplace as a safe space and that "psychological, sexual or labour exploitation occurs in a broad and normalized manner, often protected by silence and impunity".
Faced with this situation, professionals in the sector have unanimously expressed the need for "an effective, specific and binding instrument that combinesprevention, care and reparation ".
With this scenario, the protocol aims to "make the fields of work in the audiovisual and performing arts safer and fairer, establishing clear mechanisms to combat male violence and promoting collective responsibility for the entire sector. "
It is also intended to make the Protocol a "mandatory instrument for all productions and institutions in the Basque Country".
The research has been carried out thanks to the collaboration between the ADI Research Group of the UPV/EHU, the Emen Association (H) and the Union of Basque Actors (EAB), with the support of the KSIgune Cluster Connections programme. Proiecta as a whole is being developed with the support of Emakunde.
