Painter Iñaki García Erguin dies
The painter Iñaki García Erguin died at the age of 91. García Erguin began painting in the 1950s with José Lorenzo Solis, among others, and was awarded the Spanish National Painting Award in 1958.
In the 1960s he went to study in Germany, where he interacted with Anselm Kiefer's expressionism, and then, back in the Basque Country, formed the artistic group Emen with Agustín Ibarrola, Pelayo Olaortu, Jose Maria de Ucelay and Andreu Uriarte, among others.
After his first exhibition at the Arthogar Bilbao Gallery, he has exhibited his art in the Czech Republic, the United States, Poland and other countries, as well as at the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, Reina Sofia, Madrid, and the New Orleans International House. In 2017, the Bilbao Heritage Hall offered him an anthological exhibition.
He carried expressionism to the limit of abstraction on the canvas and performed opera scenes and various works for the Athletic Club, such as the 1998 centenary emblem.
