The University Counselor will call the UPV rector today to try to calm the tension
University Counselor Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias has confirmed that he will call the rector of the UPV/EHU today after making statements about the university's budget. This will try to bring positions closer together. In an interview on Radio Euskadi, he has announced that next year's accounts "guarantee sufficient funding" for the Basque public university.
The purpose of this call, he said, is to close a date for a personal meeting with Rector Bengoetxea. Since Bengoetxea asked the University Department for a direct meeting with the president, the disagreement has increased and they want to end it.
Despite the reconciliation, the counsellor has insisted that there is no room to increase the UPV budget, but has stressed that the 2026 accounts provide "more money than ever"for the university.
To the question of whether he perceives political intent in the criticismofthe rectorate, he has replied no, although he has "some suspicion".
The Chief Executive and the Rector met for the first time in public yesterday at an institutional event in which the initial tension between the two was evident, although they both tried to soften the atmosphere with some joke about the presence of the media. The meeting ended with mutual thanks and a handshake, which they both hope will be a first step towards reducing tension.
