The mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, has settled the controversy over the decision to report the origin of the detainees. The mayor of Bilbao has stated that "everything is clarified and understood" with the president of the PNV, Aitor Esteban, and that, in view of the decision of the Basque Government or the municipalities of San Sebastián, Bilbao will still not make public the origin of the detainees.
Aburto made these statements during the presentation of the Diagnosis of Security in Bilbao, a study carried out by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), by expert César San Juan, professor in the Department of Social Psychology and researcher in Applied Criminology and Environmental Psychology of the UPV/EHU.
Asked about his disagreements with Esteban about the origin of the detainees, he replied that "everything is understood and clarified" with the chairman of his party, who he said has always shown loyalty to the party.
The mayor of Bilbao has also linked his decision to the 'Pact for Security', which he renewed in 2024 with PNV, PSE, EH Bildu and Elkarrekin Bilbao. He has stressed the importance for him of "sharing" security policy with justice, citizens and other institutions.
