The Autonomous Community ofthe Basque Country(CAPV) shall have a representative in Unesco and theWorld Tourism Organization (UNWTO), who shall participate directly in the work, meetings and conferences of these institutions. are two organizations of theUnited NationsSystem "closely related to the areas of competence of the Basque Country", as reported by the Department of Culture and Linguistic Policy.
The agreement is "an opportunity to increase the capacity to interact and influence areas of special interest to the Basque Country (culture, language, heritage, education, science, tourism and sustainability)," stresses\u00A0 Ibone Bengoetxea, Vice-President and Counsellor for Culture and Linguistic Policy.
"This is a very important step towardsstrengtheningthe international presence of the Basque Country through multilateral organizations, especially at a geopolitical time when these institutions are more necessary than ever, "Bengoetxea added.
Likewise, the Councillor for Culture and Linguistic Policy has stressed that the Basque Government continues to work to ensure that the Basque Country has "its own voice"in all the international institutions and forums in which it can be present, so that" indefence of the interests of the Basque Country we can expand the limits of self-government from our perspective and vocation ".
The agreement establishes the framework for the immediate participation of the Basque Country in these international bodies and "strengthens the external projection of the Basque Country in multilateral strategic areas, as pursued by the international strategy Euskadi Global , a step in line with this strategy and with the objective set by lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, of ensuring the presence of our people in all areas of decision-making affecting Basque society ".
The Basque Country shall immediately appoint its representative to Unesco, based in Paris, as part of the permanent representation of the State to the international body, as well as to the World Tourism Organization, based in Madrid, in both cases, to participate directly in the work, meetings and conferences of these institutions in the fields of education, science and culture, as well as to develop sustainable tourism, innovation and international cooperation.
