The EU has postponed retaliation against Trump's tariffs and keeps negotiations open
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that negotiations will continue until 1 August, when the extension for negotiations ends before the surcharges on products are raised to 30%.
ThePresident of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen Europe, announced on Sunday that the European Union will continue to postpone the implementationof the retaliatory measures againsttariffs imposed by the United States .
Indeed, they are still trying to negotiate with President Donald Trumpuntil August 1 , when the extension offered by Washington for negotiations endsbefore the surcharges on the products rise to 30%.
"The United States has sent us a letter with the measures that will enter into force unless there is a negotiated solution, so we extend the suspension of our measures until August," Von der Leyen explained at a press conference from Brussels.
The President of the European Commission, who is responsible for European trade policy, has stressed that, although retaliation remains in abeyance, the EU is still preparing measures against it to be ready if negotiations with the White House finally fail.
"We are prepared to do so, and we can respond with opposite measures if necessary," Von der Leyen stressed.
In addition, the President of the European Commission has supported the single European market and stressed the importance of 'diversifying' trade relations.
The Trade Ministers of the European Union will be able to examine the situation at an extraordinary meeting of the Council on Monday, one day before the measures in force against tariffs on steel and aluminium, which will, however, be postponed until the beginning of August.
The United States is currently imposing two tariffs onproducts originating in the European Union: a 10% tariffon all European products of origin and a 25% tariff on imports of steel, aluminium and automobiles. But President Trump has warned that it could double these surcharges and bring them to 50%.
