EU and US, about to reach a "preliminary agreement" on tariffs
Trump's deadline for the deal expires on Wednesday, July 9, and the US Secretary of Commerce said tariffs will come into effect on August 1.
The European Commission has announced that it is on track to reach a "preliminary agreement" on tariffs with the US to reach a treaty before the end of the negotiation process onWednesday, July 9.
The European Commission said President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation on Sunday to discuss the matter.
"Progress has been made in reaching a preliminary agreement. We asked the Member States on Friday. Our President spoke to the United States yesterday. We are working hard to have something by 9 July," European Commission spokesman Olof Gill said at his daily press conference.
"I have nothing more to say on the subject. We are working at the highest political level, at all technical levels, "he added.
The European Trade Commissioner, Marcos Sefcovic, held high-level meetings last week to reach an agreement, and on Friday he met with the ambassadors of the Member States to report on the matter.
Von der Leyen has said that the trade between the European Union and the United States being so great, he saw a preliminary agreement as the only option.
US Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick said yesterday that tariffs will enter into force on August 1 if no agreement is reached.
