Wine unions announce mobilizations in Rioja Alavesa in search of an agreement
According to the unions LAB, ELA and UGT, the workers decided to take forward this year's "very difficult" vintage, although they will now mobilize because they have received no response from employers.
LAB, ELA and UGT will mobilize to demand a decent agreement in the vineyards and wine sector in Álava. They say that the Alavesa SEA employers and wineries have not responded to the proposal put forward by the trade unions five months ago.
Faced with this situation, the four unions have called for a vehicle protest through the Rioja Alavesa and have agreed to mobilise at the Ardoaraba Fair in Vitoria-Gasteiz in December. In a joint statement, they have explained that, if this situation continues, they do not rule out calling for stops and strikes.
Workers in the sector "have given everything to take this difficult harvest forward" so as not to lose the grapes and ensure the quality of the wines, but if the working conditions in the sector remain unimproved, they will have to look elsewhere for better opportunities.
"This gap in the distribution of wealth cannot be perpetuated. Wineries continue to make less money than they would surely like, and in the meantime the conditions in the sector are frozen," they said.
They have also called on the sector to join the general strike called for 11 November.
