Basque youth emancipate themselves almost 30 years after the European average

According to the latest study by the Basque Youth Observatory, women are emancipated almost a year earlier than men.

The average ageof emancipation in the Basque Country is 29.8 years, almost 4 years higher than the European Union average. Thus, the Vice-Minister for Youth and Demographic Challenge of the Basque Government, Xabier Legarreta, and the Director of Youth and Emancipation, Adrián López Sarachaga, have presented a report entitled 'The Keys to Emancipation in the Basque Country' .

76 % of Basque youth aged 18 to 29 would like to live outside their parents' homes, but the extension of their studies, the complex working conditions and the high cost of housing make it difficult to achieve this goal, so that they leave their parents' home five years after the age considered suitable for emancipation.

Of the total number of young people under 34 years of age, only 32.3 per cent have emancipated themselves, while among young people aged 18 to 29 the figure falls by 17.2 per cent.

According to research, most children under 30 live on rent; above that age, the main option is purchase. In the case of women, the desire for emancipation is higher than that of men, who are emancipated on average almost a year earlier than men.
