The price of eggs has risen by 30% in a year and fruit by 6% in the last month
Food prices were maintained in February, with eggs and fresh fruit being the most expensive. The shopping basket recorded monthly and annual increases, and there is tension in various commodities.
In the annual comparison of the February CPI, eggs dominate food inflation,with an increase of 30.1% over the month of , while fresh fruit has risen 6.3% in a month, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The category of food and non-alcoholic beverages had an annual rate of 3.2 per cent, two tenths higher than in January, while the prices of oils, fats and fish and shellfish remained stable compared to the declines in February 2025.
In terms of monthly data, the shopping basket increased by 0.6 per cent, mainly due to the increase in fruits, nuts, vegetables, vegetables and potatoes. Among the largest increases in a year are beef (15 per cent), sheep (8.5 per cent), legumes and fresh vegetables (8.4 per cent) and coffee, cocoa and infusions (7.5 per cent).
On the contrary, some products have become cheaper: oils and fats (-13.1%), sugar (-4.7%), potatoes (-1.3%), bread (-0.5%) and cereals (-0.2%). In addition to fruit, fresh vegetables and vegetables increased 1.2%, sheep meat fell 1.6% and pork, fish, sugar and potatoes fell 0.4%.
Overall, the annual CPI variation rate was 2.3 per cent in February, as in January, and underlying inflation rose by a tenth, to 2.7 per cent. The monthly variation in the overall index was 0.4 per cent and the harmonized CPI (CPI) was 2.5 per cent per annum, a tenth higher than the previous month.
