Basque universities had 72,915 enrolmentslast year , 2.5% more than in the previous year, especially in private universities, with 5% more students than in 2022/2023, while public universities grew 1.2%.
However, public universities continue to train the majority of students, namely 68.1%, especially in doctoral studies (85.7%), according to data published this Thursday by the Basque Institute of Statistics, Eustat.

Pedagogy and Child Education were the most chosen degrees by women, with 88.4 per cent and 85.3 per cent respectively, whilein Automotive, Marine and Mechatronics Engineering only one in ten students was female.

In terms of language, more than half of the credits enrolled were in Spanish(54.6 per cent). The use of the Basque language was 37.7 per cent and that of English 7.3 per cent.Thepresence of other languages such as French and German was very low.
The Basque language was more present in public universities than in private universities; specifically, the Basque language is used in 43.1 per cent of public credits, 16 per cent more than in private universities, while private universities exceeded the public in English education (12.2 per cent and 4.9 per cent respectively).
In 2023/2024, 14,608 students graduated from the universities of the Basque Country, 2.4 per cent more than in the previous year. The increase occurred at all academic levels, especially in doctorates , where 669 theses were exceeded, 50 more than in the previous year, an increase of 8.1 per cent.
