Child Care Day Reductions or Leave Allowances will be increased by 10%
In addition, single-parent families with children between the ages of 4 and 7 will receive aid of EUR 100, the same amount as large families already receive. The Basque Government plans to adopt a new decree by January or February 2026.
The Department of Social Welfare, Youth and Demographic Challenges of the Basque Government has presented a package of measures for the reconciliation of Basque families, which will be implemented in the first quarter of 2026. The main innovation is that the amount of this aid will be increased by 10% for those who reduce their working hours or apply for leave to care for children or dependent family members and 30% for vulnerable families.
The announcement was made by Nerea Melgosa, Counsellor for Welfare, Youth and Demographic Challenge, following the plenary session of the Basque Council of Families held this Tuesday in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
In the case of leave, family income of less than EUR 20 000 is increased from EUR 3 500 per year to EUR 3 850 (taking 100% of the day and year as a reference). In the case of reductions in working hours from 33% to 40% (minimum aid), the amount is extended from EUR 2 200 to EUR 2 420 for incomes of less than EUR 20 000.In addition, a cheque of EUR 200 per month for each dependent child will be extended to four years, but will not be retroactive, and single-parent families with children between the ages of 4 and 7 will also receive EUR 100 per month from large families.
Melgosa has explained that the Government intends to implement these decrees as soon as possible so that they can be adopted in January or February next year.
Thus, for the first time in 15 years, the Department headed by Counsellor Nerea Melgosa updates Decree 164/2019, which provides for redundancies and reductions in the care of minors or dependents, in addition to facilitating administrative procedures for access to such assistance .Next year the Basque Government will invest EUR 32.7 million in conciliation, rearing and families.
