A new Council of Official Languages is formed, changing its "form and substance"
TheUniversity of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU) today hosted the constituent meeting of the new Official Languages Council , at an event held at the Miramar Palace in Donostia-San Sebastián, with a new composition with a larger representation than has been the case, including representativesof the Autonomous Communities.
The appointments were published last September in the Official Gazette of the State and have been constituted with today's act. has explained that the "form and substance" of the Council of Official Languages, which until now was composed of representatives of the General Administration of the State, has been "completely" transformed.
In this new phase, the main objective of the Organization will be to ensure compliance with the legislationon official languages , both in the Spanish Constitution and in the Statutes of the Autonomous Communities, as well as with international agreements to safeguard the linguistic rights of citizens, in order to guarantee theright of citizens to use official languages in their relations with the General Administration of the State, especially in those communities with more than one official language.
The Council for Official Languages shall meet at least once a year, and its functions include disseminating the "values for linguistic diversity" of the Spanish States.

The Spanish Government launched the Council of Official Languages in 2008 with the aim of "improving the attention to the linguistic rights of citizens" and in 2018 the political representatives of the Autonomous Communities and the institutions related to the language were first invited to the Council, which have so far acted as opinion speakers and which from now on will be represented in the structure.
Today's event was attended by, among others, UPV/EHU Rector Joxerramon Bengoetxea and Sonia Rodriguez, Director of Linguistic Research and Coordination of the Basque Government.
