San Sebastian City Council has the possibility of making thecity one of the venues of the 2030 World Cup, but Mayor Jon Insausti has insisted that before making a final decision, the consequences and implications of the event must be analysed in depth.
The mayor has said that the City Council is considering both the "positive" and the "negative" consequences of this grand rendezvous and has argued that the debate should be addressed "seriously, rigorously and transparently".
Insausti points out that the city has experience in organizing international eventssuch as the Festival, the Jazz Festival or the Donosti Cup, so it has sufficient management and logistics capacity.
However, it warns that the World Cup "is not just any event" and that before making a final decision , economic, fiscal, legal, mobility and infrastructure aspects must be assessed.
The mayor has explained that the City Council has already submitted two reports to FIFA — one on governance and one on legal governance— and is now working on a third economic document, which is expected to be delivered by the end of the month.
According to Insausti, the City Council and FIFA itself are working together to assess whether San Sebastian meets all the requirements for hosting the tournament.
For her part, the socialist spokeswoman, Ane Oyarbide, has asked the mayor for "more firmness" in defending the candidacy. Oyarbide has considered the World Cup to be a "great opportunity" to revive the local economy, strengthen trade and improve infrastructure.
