Chavism has prevailed in the municipal elections held this Sunday in Venezuela, according to the final results released by the CNE National Electoral Council.

The official party will remain in power in the capital, Caracas, as in the last 25 years, and Carmen Meléndez has been re-elected mayor. She will also take control of the city of Maracaibo, previously under the control of the opposition.

According to the National Electoral Council, 82.45 per cent of the polling stations accounted for 44 per cent of the votes, with a total of 6,273,531 people (21.5 million Venezuelans had the right to vote).

A total of 2,806 positions have been elected to the municipal elections, including 2,471 councillors. The largest opposition coalition had called for no vote, considering that there is also "fraud" in these elections.

Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado says 9 out of 10 citizens have said no to Maduro.
