The UN Security Council is holding an urgent meeting on Monday to discuss the US air strikeagainst Venezuela and the arrest ofPresidentNicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

The meeting will begin at 10:00 local time (15:00 GMT), as the rotating Presidency of the Council has approved the call for , which corresponds to Somalia in January.
The Venezuelan Government itself called for an assembly of the Security Council shortly after the attacks, which destroyed various civilian and military infrastructures and killed dozens of Venezuelans.
"The purpose of this colonial war is to destroy the republican government freely elected by our people and to impose a government that plunders our resources, including the world's largest oil reserves," Venezuela's ambassador to the UN Samuel Moncada wrote to the Security Council.
For his part, a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that military action is a "dangerous precedent" .
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday that his country had launcheda "large-scale successful attack"on Venezuela, and that Maduro and Flores had been" captured "and taken out of the country.
