Burnham has gained broad support from his colleagues by obtaining the endorsement of 379 of the 403 members of the Labour group in the House of Commons, as well as 8 of the 11 unions affiliated with the ruling party.
Starmer resignedon 22 June after two years in powerafter falling into the polls and suffering a historic defeat in the regional and local elections in May.
In the party's first speech, Burnham opted for a government based on traditional Labour values , with a comprehensive programme of economic innovation, greater public control, reindustrialization and the return of power to local communities.
"We will undoubtedly be Labour in our priorities and in the decisions we make, putting people and territories at the centre of everything we do , "said the new leader, who has made the decentralisation of the state the centrepiece of his political project.
Burnham has claimed that the UK "made some wrong decisions in the 1980s," when "political power was centralized and economic power was privatized," and has advocated the need to open up "a new path"after four decades of that model.
He has stressed that his goal is to boost economic growth in all regions of the country and restore control to local communities, following the pattern of territorial development that he promoted during his tenure as mayor of Greater Manchester.
It has also proclaimedtheUK's most united Labour Party , focused on its public service mission, and committed itself to governing the UK "for the north and south, for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and for every town and city."
He also thanked Starmer for the work and everything that Burnham has done so far, which brought Labour back to power with an absolute majority in 2024, and assured him that he is "ready to take over. "
