A trial against Nelson David Moreno Bolaños.
The Bizkaia High Court will begin a new trial on Wednesday against Nelson David Moreno Bolaños. The defendant has been linked to the murder of at least five homosexual men — which, according to investigators, could be up to seven — during the fall of 2021 in Bilbao. The current case relates to the alleged murder of a 77-year-old man after having had an appointment through an app.
Moreno Bolaños has already been convicted in three trials, the first in which he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempting to kill a man he had met through an app in December 2021.
In the second trial, he was sentenced to two years and three months for economic crimes after stealing from a man; it remains to be seen whether this case will also be tried as homicide.
At the last trial, he was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment for the murder in October 2021 of a 43-year-old music teacher, who was strangled using mataleon technique and then robbed.
Long trial
Be that as it may, Moreno Bolaños still has more trials ahead of him, as he has been linked to a total of five homicides — which investigators believe could be seven — and two other assassination attempts.
The current trial is related to the alleged murder of a 77-year-old man on 5 October 2021. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the modus operandi used was very similar to that used in the case of the music teacher.
The defendant, who was then a 24-year-old, contactedthe 77-year-old man through the Wapo contact app. In the victim's home, and in the context of a sexual relationship, he strangled him by mataleon technique, and then took money from his bank accounts using his mobile phone.
More trials in the fall
According to the Central Criminal Investigation Unit of the Ertzaintza, Moreno Bolaños used the same behaviour in several attacks in Bilbao in the fall of 2021, to the point of having a sense of impunity.
The defense has argued that the defendant was acting under the command of a gang dedicated to the theft of homosexual males, but neither the Ertzaintza nor the jurors have given credibility to the defendant's account. It remains to be seen whether the defense will use the same strategy in the current trial.
