U.S. Congressional Democrats Want to Slow AI Development After Sector Leaders "Alarm, Trump Says" It Won't Happen "
Democrats in the lower house will meet on Tuesday, where "an important priority will be action on artificial intelligence," they have advanced.
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, has urged Congress to act "urgently" to slow down artificial intelligence, after industry leaders ( Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk) called for it.
Jeffries has advanced that there will be a meeting of Democrats in the lower house on Tuesday, at which "an important priority will be action on artificial intelligence," following warnings from Amodei, founder and CEO of Anthropic, about the dangers of AI.
"We should now take decisive steps, as CEOs have recently called for, to slow the pace of technology development, protect U.S. citizens, and ensure that AI acts safely," he added.
Jeffries has not revealed what specific measures he would push forward, but he has criticized the Republicans for standing still.
In particular, Republican and House Leader Mike Johnsonhas rejected the imposition of an emergency moratorium because he believes that the development of IA should continue to "prevent China from having leadership."
With the same argument, U.S. President Donald Trump has called those calling for regulation of artificial intelligence a "negative force . "" We can protect, we can do this and that. But I think there are a lot of negative forces raising the issue, but they shouldn't, and they're raising things that aren't going to happen.
"We are leading Artificial Intelligence against China, we are the most sophisticated country in the world, and I want to keep that because whoever wins with AI wins," the president insisted.
