Basque families have spent more than ever on hospitality, 4,207 euros
The average household expenditure in the Basque Country remained stable in 2024, but leisure and restaurants continue to gain weight over food, transport and education.
The households of the Basque Country allocated an average of 4,207 euros to hotels, cafes and restaurants in 2024, 3% more than the previous year, which is 11.6% ofthe budget, the highest level so far, as reflected in the latest data published by Eustat showing the change in consumption preferences of the Basque families .
Theaverage total household expenditure was €36,313 , just lessthan in 2023, while aggregate expenditure was €34,312 million, with a slight increase of 0.1%. However, leisure, entertainment and culture (+8.4%, up to €1,732) or financial insurance and services (+9.6%, up to €1,261) grew strongly, and some more traditional (-7.9%).
Housing is the main burden of the family budget, with an average of 13,008 euros per year, more than one third of the total (35.8 per cent), which together with food accounts for more than half (51.3 per cent) of household expenditure in the Basque Country.
By territory, Gipuzkoa had the highest average household expenditure, with €36,765 (+1.9 per cent), while in Bizkaia the average expenditure was €36,730 (+0.7 per cent), while in Álava expenditure fell by 6.4 per cent, to €34,020.
