Here's the subway of the future. These will be his next stops
After three decades on the rails, the Bilbao metro will now have to invest more than EUR 800 million to renovate its fleet and launch lines 4 and 5.
Although Metro Bilbao is immersed in its 30th anniversary, it is also looking to the future. The General Representative of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, has advanced that an investment of between 700 and 800 million euros is planned for fleet renewal or new lines.
The "future subway" will includethe new\ u00A0 trains and the new communications system, as the contract to order these new convoys will be ready by the end of the year.
In addition , 37 new units will have an innovative system of sensorized wagons to provide real-time information within the subway.
The 37 future trains replacing the current ones will allow the number of passengers to increase by between 11% and 15% and will be able to travel in less time to improve frequencies at times of greatest demand.
"These units will be able to measure and communicate almost everything, which will be a real revolution in the way the subway is maintained and operated," says Eneko Arruebarrena, director of Metro Bilbao.
Fleet change will also lead to a 35% reduction in energy consumption.
On the other hand, Metro Bilbao is preparing its lines 4 and 5 , "future lines", which, according to Etxanobe, will take the subway to Galdakao Hospital and to new neighborhoods such as Irala, Rekalde, Basurto or Zorroza.
