The Basque Government is seeking measures to alleviate the losses of the reduction of verdel fishing
It will convene meetings to analyse the economic impact of the new quotas and to consider measures to mitigate losses. In addition, theEuropeanUnionprovides for restrictions for other species .
Mackerel ready to be transported.
The Basque Governmenthas announced that it will immediately put to work the Basque fishermenmost affectedby the restrictions on fishing quotas , especially those who usually fish in verdel , since Europar Bunidad (EU) has approved a provisional agreement to determinethe fishing quotas for 2026, according to which
The Basque Government has analysed that 'the agreement will affect Basque fishermen in a different way : there will be significant increases in some species of high commercial value and significant restrictions inothers, particularly in the verdel '.
In addition, the agreement provides for significant restrictions on other species of offshore fishing, such as hake (-4.8 per cent),marine rooster (-20 per cent), cod (-13 per cent), sole (-1 per cent) and rape (-1.3 per cent and -3 per cent, depending on area).
Having learned of these limitations, the Minister forFood, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries oftheBasque Government, Amaia Barredo , in her capacity as coordinator of the Autonomous Communities, believes that the EU agreement is in line with 'scientific recommendations', but it is a 'particularly difficult' measure for certain fishermen in the sector, such as those who regularly fish mackerel.
"The reduction of verdel will have a negative impact on Basque fishermen specializing in this fishery, so our overall assessment is negative, "the counsellor said.
The Basque Government has announced that it will "immediately" work with the sector most affected by the cuts, "especially those that tend to fish mackerel", and will convene meetings with the Ministry, brotherhoods and representative organizations to analyse the economic impact of the new quotas and to consider measures to help alleviate the losses.
The proposals include the possibility of establishingtemporary stops, adjustments or relaxations in fisheries management.
Barredo has applauded the European recognitionof the sustainable management carried out by Basque fishermen in anchovyN and other similar species, "thanks to which their quotas and those of bluefin tuna have been increased", he stressed.
The Council of Fisheries Ministers of the European Union reached a political agreement in Brussels this morning on scientific advice and sustainability objectives.
