The European Union(EU) has adopted an interim agreement on fishing quotas by 2026 which providesfor a 73% reduction in verdel fishing during the first half of the year.

Asfar as anchovy is concerned, good news for Basque fishermen, since the limit of max has been authorised (a total of 29,700 tonnes will be allowed to be captured). In addition, the quota of tunaand prettywill be increased by 17%. Hake will be maintained with the same quota as this year (17,445 tonnes), which will give some stability to fishermen.

Similarly, the reduction in the abadejo quota has ended up being lower than expected: 13% instead of the 28% originally proposed.

The decision, which will affect several Member States, has been taken with concernbytheAgriculture and Fisheries Adviser, Amaia Barredo , who had previously warned that reducing this measure could jeopardize the viability of the fishing fleet.

In the case of the Mediterranean, negotiations have also been very difficult, and the Spanish Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, LuisPlanas , has confirmed that fishermen will be able to fish until 143 days in 2026. Hasiera tra-fishing was intended to be approved by the European Commission for 9.7 days.

The approved quotaswill remain in force until June , pending further negotiations with Norway, Iceland, the United Kingdom and the Faroe Islands , while the fisheries sector is preparing to adapt to these changes and will continue negotiations in the coming months.

The fishermen of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa have made a bittersweet assessment of the fishing quotas set by the EU

The agreement reached is bad news for Ondarroa's tall fleet, which, among other things, has reduced the quotas for hake and rooster, but the most affected are small vessels that fish for mackerel with bait, which have reduced the number of catches by 70%, while for inshore fishermen the agreement is' positive 'due to the maintenance of the fair share and the increase in the share of bluefin tuna and anchovy.
