French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard has announced that vaccinesagainst contagious nodular dermatosis in the south-west of the French state will begin on Monday. She has not announced any changes to the protocol, while farmers continue to protest.
"With farmers we will face the challenge of vaccinating a million animals as soon as possible, which is the way to deal with the disease. This vaccination is crucial," Genevard told radio station Europe 1.
Meanwhile, farmers in the Basque Country continue to mobilise. They protest against the protocol established by the French Government for these cases, which obliges all cattle on a farm to sacrifice if a positive appears. There have been no cases in the North yet, but they fear that they will have to take "this excessive measure" in the near future. Since Friday, several roads have been blocked in protest, including the A64 in Beskoitz, between Baiona and in Toulouse in France, and today tractors have also been moved to San Juan de Luz.
A number of farmers who were not in Beskoitze have cut off traffic with 50 tractors from Urrugne to the San Juan de Luz bridge at noon. Around 4.30 p.m. it has been decided that some of them will approach the Beskoitze area to reinforce the blockade on the A64 motorway.
According to the Vinci Highway Company on its website, traffic continues to be severely interrupted in the south-west of the French State and the A64 and A62 are partially cut off. The first is in both directions, between Montréjeau (exit 17), Beskoitze (exit 3) and Urt (exit 4), as well as access to the A645.
In an open letter, Carole Delga , the socialist president of the Occitania region, has asked Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu to intervene and establish a "sincere and honest" dialogue with farmers, "the only way to ease the tensions that are getting worse in many departments." Delga has stated that "anger is constantly growing in the face of public despair."
On Saturday afternoon, the Prefect of the Atlantic Pyrenees met for two hours with representatives of the Coordination Rurale, who asked him to convey their demands to the Ministry, which will meet on Monday afternoon in Pau with representatives of the Confederation Paysanne and the ELB.
