It is a viral disease, belonging to the Reoviridae family, which affects ruminants, whether domestic or wild.

Dozens of rural professionals have gathered in Vitoria-Gasteiz in response to the call for the association Ataca (Association of Farmers and Farmers of Álava and Treviño) to urge the Basque Government to declare the area of drought in order to receive specific aid to deal with the effects of drought and heat waves.

In an interview on Radio Euskadi this Friday, Barredo explained that although the Fodder Table is not yet convened, this does not mean that there will be any delays.

For two weeks now, the Fodder Table has met and the institutions have made a number of commitments. Many farmers have started buying grass and straw on their own and have called on the institutions to take immediate action.

The animal from a herd of more than 200 sheep vaccinated against the disease has tested positive for serotype 3 of the bluetongue.

The purchase will take place in August, following a survey to determine the actual needs of the farms hit hardest by the drought, while direct subsidies will be analysed by the end of the year.

The consultancy proposes, among other things, how these forests can be exploited in a sustainable manner, that is, how much wood can be extracted from each forest in 10 or 15 years, without the loss of volume of forests. In addition, municipalities are obliged to invest 20% of the money they receive from their exploitation (sale of timber or leasing of land) in the mountain. It also advises how to make these investments.

Members of the primary sector, including tractors, demonstrated this Saturday in Vitoria-Gasteiz against the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur and in defence of the food sovereignty of the Basque Country.
