Farmers are calling for a joint purchase of fodder and an immediate declaration of drought
For two weeks now, the Fodder Table has met and the institutions have made a number of commitments. Many farmers have started buying grass and straw on their own and have called on the institutions to take immediate action.
Farmers and farmers complain that the Basque institutions are slow to comply with the commitments made two weeks ago. They are calling on the Basque Government to activate the joint purchase of fodder as soon as possible and to declare a drought situation.
The ranchers look to the future with concern. Many of them brought the animals down from the mountains and high pastures in July because of the drought, because there is no water or grass in the highlands, and they are feeding on the fodder reserved for the winter.
That being the case, they expect any costs they may incur in the coming weeks and months to be high.
On 7 August, the Fodder Table convened by the Basque Government met in Vitoria-Gasteiz , where the institutions and agents gathered agreed to make a joint purchase of fodder and other supplies.
However, the primary trade unions believe that the days are passing, that the measure has not been implemented and that many farmers have started buying grass, feed and straw on their own. They have asked the institutions to make the decisions as soon as possible, not least because of the constant increase in the price of fodder due to high demand.
Declaration of drought
Iñigo Bilbao, of the ENBA union, also believes that the purchase of fodder will not be the only measure tomitigate the effects of drought. The total loss of grass in many departments will force the seed to be thrown back in order to produce quality grass next year, increasing costs.
In view of all this, Bilbao has requested the Basque Government, as a legal and regulatory safeguard , to establish an official declaration of drought, which it considers would provide protection to all rural residents in order to carry out work to overcome the water shortage.
