The Basque institutions will make a joint purchase of fodder to support smaller livestock farms
The purchase will take place in August, following a survey to determine the actual needs of the farms hit hardest by the drought, while direct subsidies will be analysed by the end of the year.
Basque institutions and operators in the livestock sector will make a joint purchase of fodder and other supplies in August to help the smaller farms most affected bythe drought. The decision was taken on Thursday at the meeting of the Fodder Bureau held in Vitoria-Gasteiz, attended by members of parliament, agricultural organisations, cooperatives and feed companies, among others.
Prior to the purchase, a survey will be sent to all livestock farms in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country in order to determine the actual fodder needs and the most appropriate supply formats, with a view to obtaining the results in one or two weeks, on the basis of which the joint purchase will be organized.
Smaller farms preferably
The Agriculture Counsellor, Amaia Barredo, has pointed out that it is the smaller farms that are in the most difficult situation, since due to lack of water and pasture they have had to start using fodder reserved for winter and are not used to buying fodder, unlike large farms.
The Councillor has stressed the need to 'act quickly', but has also pointed out that the situation is not critical, as there are reserves of fodder and maize fodder and supply is guaranteed on the market, although direct subsidies have been ruled out for the time being, as the impact of the drought will be assessed at the end of the year.
The agricultural unions, for their part, have called for urgent measures such as bringing water to mountain pastures, warning that if the situation persists, farmers will have to go down to their homes earlier and feed themselves months earlier than expected, thereby increasing farm costs.
