ErNE warns of security inertia and that 2026 will be a danger to citizens
The ErNE union of the Ertzaintza has denounced the "serious immobility" of the Department of Safety and Security in the field of public order, a situation which, in its view, poses a "direct risk to citizens" in 2026. The union has reproached it for the lack of real investment, effective planning and greater respect for the professionals responsible for ensuring security.
According to ErNE, the Ertzaintza works with "clearly outdated" material, such as vans and shields with more than 25 years of service, broken or unused launchers, to which must be added an overloaded staff due to excessive overtime, which, they stress, seriously limits its ability to act in the face of public order incidents.
The Trade Union regrets that, after each incident, the same pattern of reassuring messages and public commitments that do not bring real improvement is repeated, and therefore calls for a change of course to strengthen specialized training, urgently renew material resources and infrastructure and put an end to the abuse of overtime.
