What investments does Aena propose at Basque airports?
The company has opposed the transfer of airport management to the Basque Country and has announced an investment plan of almost EUR 13 billion, including the expansion of Loiu and improvements in Hondarribia and Foronda.
Aena's President, Maurici Lucena, has presented the 2027-2031 Airport Regulation Document (DORA III) , which envisages an investment of around EUR 13 billionto ensure the capacity to expand and modernize airports and cope with passenger growth.
In Bilbao, Aena plans to expand the Loiu terminal on both sides , increasing the capacity for billing, controls and passage. In Hondarribia, the boarding rooms will be improved and the escollera and track will be strengthened, while in Foronda the track and loading area will be renovated .
Investments shall be made through the Airport Coordination Committees and may be contributed by the Autonomous Communities. Projects are expected to be completed by the end of the summer and implemented within five years.
In addition, Aena has proposed an averageannual increase of EUR 0.43 per passenger , which will vary depending on the size of each airport and will be among the lowest in Europe, as indicated.
According to the plan, Spanish airports have 1,690 million passengers managed between 2027 and 2031, with more moderate growth after the post-pandemic recovery.
