The effect of the poor coastline of the verdel has been mitigated and the evolution of anchovy in the Basque Country has been 'better'
Representatives of the fisheries sector have expressed concern about the situation of the verdel and have called for an analysis of the need for recovery measures, highlighting the positive impact of the management model imposed on anchovy.
The verdel fished in the Basque ports.
The coast of the verdel has experienced a significant decrease this year . Euskal catches have been located at 2.5 million kilograms , compared to 5.7 million in 2025, a significant decrease that reflects the difficulty of the campaign, especially for smaller craft vessels, which have experienced great difficulties in the normal development of their activity.
At theend of April, a total of 5.9 million kilograms were fished in the Cantabrian Sea, about 39% of the quota. The Basque Country has once again played a leading role, since in the bere slabs there are almost 4.9 million kilograms of land , that is, most of the catches at the state level, with an average priceof 3.96 euros per kilogram, above last year.
The Ministerof Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government, Amaia Barredo , hasdescribedthis year's Verdel campaign as particularly complex , highlighting its impact on artisanal vessels, which have had difficulties in developing their activity normally.
In view of this situation, the flexibility mechanisms have been put in place to mitigate the consequences. Hor it has been possible to transfer to other segments the unused quotas of one part of the fleet of the verdel. Sthis system allows, on the one hand, to compensate for the loss of revenue of the artisanal vessels UuA0du and, on the other hand, to strengthen the activity of the trawlers 0D\u00l D\u00lllllllllElllllllllllllllllElllllllllllllllAlAAlllllA more than AAlAAAllllllllllllllllllAA more than A more than AA more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than A more than EllllllllllllllllllllllAllAOn thecontrary, the anchovy coastline has evolved better. Euskadi catches have reached 4.4 million, 51% of the quota, with an increase of about 1.5 million compared to the previous year. The state quota has been 30.4 million kilograms, compared to 12.2 million at the end of April (42%).
The average priceof anchovy is EUR 1.91 per kilogram, as part of the campaign, which has good prospects in the coming weeks and is developing more evenly, although the authorities stress the importance of evaluating developments in May to complete the balance sheet.
In this context, representatives of the fisheries sector have expressed concern about the situation of the verdel, raising the need for recovery measures and highlighting the positive impact of the management model imposed on anchovy.
