Errenteria takes advantage of the new Urgent Housing Measures Act to promote 755 homes in Gamongo
The Housing Advisor of the Basque Government, Denis Itxaso, welcomed the decision of the City of Gipuzkoa and stressed that EH Bildu has moved from designating the law as a "counter-reform" to using it to develop one of the main projects of the municipality.
The Councillor for Housing and Urban Agenda of the Basque Government, Denis Itxaso, has welcomed the announcement by the Town Hall of Errenteria to implement the Law on Urgent Measures in Housing, Land and Urban Planning for the construction of 755 housing units in the Gamongoa area. In his opinion, the decision shows that the instruments promoted by the Basque Government are being taken over by municipalities of different political sensitivities.
Itxaso has stressed that EH Bildu has gone from describing the rule as a "counter-reform" to using it to develop one of Errenteria's main residential projects, a development that he has summed up by stating thatthesovereign party has gone on to "lead the procession."
The Councillor has pointed out that the implementation of the law will make it possible to unblock an urban area that has been paralysed for years. He has explained that the current plan initially provided for 690 housing units, but that the new instruments provided for in the regulations will make it possible to increase building capacity by 10% and reach the planned 755.
The Errenteria City Council announced on Thursday that it will use this law to develop the new Gamongoa neighborhood .The project envisages 75% of the houses will be public protection and also provides for the creation of a large green area of the city, about 20 hectares.
Itxaso has stressed that the development will not reduce the planned volume of sheltered housing, but will facilitate its actual construction and has advanced that the Housing Department has informed the City Council of its willingness to contribute to the promotion of public rental housing in this area.
This operation will allow the addition of a plot of land to the public land heritage of the Basque Government, where about 100 houses of protected rent can be built, according to the Errenteria City Council itself.
The counsellor has argued that this type of initiative reflects a change of stage in housing policies and hopes that more municipalities will follow the same path to accelerate the construction of protected housing and increase the supply of affordable housing in Hego Euskal Herria.
The parliamentarian has pointed out that the promotion to be carried out in Gamongo "highlights two issues: EH Bildu's total commitment to solving the serious housing problem; and two, that it can be done without lowering the standards of protected housing".
