Unemployment rose in the Basque Country in September to 109,237 people, but the number of members also increased
Unemployment rose in the three territories: 2.84 per cent in Álava, 2.33 per cent in Gipuzkoa and 2.01 per cent in Bizkaia, with 109,237 unemployed and 1,041,618 contributors.
The number of unemployed in the Basque Autonomous Community increased by 2,389 in September compared with August, bringing the number of unemployed to 109,237 at the end of the month, an increase of 2.24 per cent over the previous month, according to data published by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy.
Unemployment has also risen since September last year, with 2,268 more unemployed in the Basque Country, an increase of 2.12%.
Unemployment has risen in all three territories.
In Bizkaia, more than half the unemployed
In Bizkaia, 61,679 people were unemployed, 1,215 more than in August, an increase of 2.01 per cent.
In Gipuzkoa, 29,156 people were unemployed, 665 more than in the previous month, an increase of 2.33 per cent.
In Álava, the number of unemployed persons stood at 18,402, 508 more than in August, with the largest increase of 2.84 per cent.
More than a million contributors in the Basque Country
The rise in unemployment has been accompanied by an increase in Social Security membership in the Basque Country, with 10,336 more workers affiliated in September, bringing the total number of contributors to 1,041,618, an increase of 1% over August.
Compared to September last year, membership has increased by 2.29%, or 23,358 more contributors.
The increase in September follows the figures for August, when the Basque Country lost 11,018 members in the summer month compared to July.
In Spain, too, it's gone up.
In the State, unemployment rose by 23,587 people in September compared to August, with an increase of 1 per cent, bringing the total number of unemployed to 2,379,505.
In the year-on-year comparison, however, the trend is different, with 42,160 fewer unemployed in Spain than in September 2025, a decrease of 1.74%.
In terms of membership, Spain closed September with 22,437,553 workers, 92,327 more than in August (0.41%).
