The population with foreign nationality has grown significantly over the past 40 years
According to the latest EITB Data study, which analyses the changes experienced by Basque society in the 45 years since the first Basque Government was launched, the population ofthe Basque Country has grown by 3.7%, despite the fall in the birth rate, one of the factors compensating for this is the increase in the number of immigrants.
The population of the Basque Country with foreign nationality was 0.2 per cent in 1985, compared with 13.3 per cent in 2024.
This population is on average 35 years old and therefore contributes to the rejuvenation of society, with about 27 per cent of the population aged 20 to 44 being of foreign origin.
Similarly, with regard to the birth rate, there is a fundamental issue. 26.6 per cent of women who had a child in 2024 had foreign nationality and began to have children when they were younger.
