A Shigelosi outbreak has activated alarms in Bilbao
The Departmentof Health of the Basque Government has reported an outbreak of shigelosis inBilbao. For the time being, five cases have been confirmed and three others are under investigation.
Shigelosis is an acute intestinal infection that is transmitted mainly through excrement and mouth. The most common symptoms are fever and diarrhea.
Normally, the disease naturally disappears after 4-7 days .
From the moment the cases have been confirmed, the Department of Health and the Bilbao City Councilhave activatedthe epidemiological and food research , while calling for the strengthening of preventive measures.
So far, only five cases have been confirmed, but three others are being investigated.
The Basque Government recalls the importance of strengthening basic hygiene measures, such as hand washing to prevent the spread of infection.
Preventive measures
The Department of Health has shared a number of measures to prevent Shigelosis infection and stressed the importance of following the recommendations:
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after going to the bathroom or changing diapers and before manipulating food.
- Avoid sharing personal hygiene tools or elements, ensuring proper cleaning and disinfection of surfaces.
- Ensure that food and water are safe and well treated or prepared.
- When diarrhea occurs, it is recommended not to go to work environments until full recovery. If fever or blood is detected during excrement, it is essential to go to the health center.
