Christmas train, night race and table football championship: that's how Metro Bilbao will celebrate its 30th anniversary
The Bilbao Metro will be three decades old this year, offering concerts, sweepstakes and special decorations, as well as the "Christmas train", the football championship and the night race in Underru.
Metro Bilbao has turned 30 years into the most widely used means of transport in Bizkaia and will celebrate it with an agenda full of activities designed to thank the trust of the thousands of people who use it every day.
The presentation took place at Sarriko station and was attended by Metro Bilbao MP Elixabete Etxanobe and BilbaoCEO Eneko Arruebarrena Metro.
Since its inauguration on 11 November 1995, has transported more than2,281 million passengers and travelled 123 million kilometres .
Etxanobe has highlighted the "vision and courage" of those who promoted the project three decades ago and recalled that the subway is facing a new era of modernization :
"By the end of this year we will have a technical document defining the second generation of trains, and then we will convene the board of the Bizkaia Transport Consortium to tender for renewal," he said.
The planned investment will be between EUR 700 and 800 million , half of which will be taken over by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.

Before the year full of celebrations
Beyond institutional announcements, Metro Bilbao wants to share its anniversary with the citizens through a programming that will last for a whole year.
"We want this celebration to be a recognition of the trust that people place in us day by day," Arruebarrena said.
Among the most expected events are the following:
- The "Christmas train", a magical children 's trip, will take place on December 22, along with Christmas decorations at the stations.
- Underrun night race, which will have two different routes on the night of 29 to 30 March 2026.
- Ansio football championship, scheduledfor 30 and 31 January 2026,where customers can compete in a festive atmosphere.
In addition to these events, there will be other initiatives such as the delivery of gifts and musical performances on 11 November, the publication of the commemorative book "The Next Station..." or the international conference on public transport and sustainability to be held at the Euskalduna Palace from 1 to 3 December.
"This anniversary is an opportunity to look to the future with illusion, innovation and sustainability, but also to celebrate the present with all the people who make Metro Bilbao possible every day," concludes Arruebena.
