Minister Bolaños announces a joint commission to ensure reparation for victims of sexual assault in the church
He has met with victims' associations at the Moncloa Palace, including Navarre, and has acknowledged that the PRIVA plan of the Church "is not the solution".
The Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, Felix Bolaños, has announced the creation of a joint body to compensate victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, especially in cases where judicial redress is not possible. At his meeting on Tuesday afternoon with representatives of the victims' associations 22, including Navarra, he has acceptedthatthe Comprehensive Reparation Plan for Victims of Abuse (PRIVA), which the Church launched, is "The Solution".
During the meeting in La Moncloa, the Government's discussions with the Catholic Churchhave been discussed , as well as the status of the reparation and recognition plan promoted by the Government on the basis of the recommendations of the Ombudsman, which, according to sources from the Ministry, has passed in an "atmosphere of trust and understanding", while the victims have been "sufficiently satisfied" at the exit.
The victims have informed the minister that with the PRIVA plan "there is no reparation or recognition" and that the Church is "intimidating" many of the victims. The spokesman for the association Infancias Robadas,Juan Cuatrecasas, has explained that with this plan "they will compensate only 39 victims with derisory amounts."
According to Cuatrecasas, the Government has confirmed to them its commitment to set up a mixed body as soon as possible. It will consist of a Church and State commission with theparticipation of the victims and ensuring that the Church will provide reparations. Bolaños has advanced to them that "it is trying to involve the Church".
The associations hope that this body will really get compensation, and not just financial compensation. Asko says they need protection at the time of therapy or denunciation, and help fight school and work exclusion.
