Ertzaintza reports Instagram scams replacing known people
Fraudsters create profiles similar to those of well-known public figures and encourage people to make false investments in cryptocurrencies and financial products, they warn.
The Ertzaintza has reported on Instagrama type of scam that is spreading . the authors supplant the identity of known people on Instagram and from these profiles offer supposed opportunities to invest in cryptocurrencies or fraudulent financial products.
The Cybersecurity Coordination Headquarters has explained that fraudsters imitate original profiles with almost identical names, modifying a letter, script or point, which can confuse users, and copy photos and biography of the actual account to give greater credibility to the replacement.
After creating a false profile, they begin to massively follow the followers of the real public image and send them private messages with their investment proposals, thus taking advantage of the notoriety and confidence that the replaced person inspires.
The Ertzaintza recommends carefully examining the full name of the profile and distrust any offer received by private message . Remember that public figures never manage personal investments through social networks.
In the event of receiving such messages, the police advise not to respond, not to open links, or to download files, which can be redirected to false pages, or to install malicious programs that steal personal data or bank data.
Finally, the Ertzaintza has asked those affected to go to the nearest police station to file a complaint.
