Ertzaintza has launched a group specializing in violence against women
The Security Department of the Basque Government has announced that it has been operating a unit specializing in violence against women for weeks.
This group consists of six women, a commissioner, a manager and four officers, who are responsible for "coordination to improve the management and care of cases of male violence" and who join the work carried out in all police stations.
This group provides active protection to the victim, regardless of the court decision, and the battered woman in the most serious cases is escorted to court by the officers when she goes to the first proceedings .
The Department of Safety and Security has reported this new unit along with this year's data report on violence.
According to the data, the number of complaints of male violence has increased. Between January and October 2025, the Ertzaintza recorded 5,975 crimes in different forms of violence against women committed by a partner or ex-partner, a family member at home or against sexual freedom. Compared to the same period last year, this type of crime has generally increased by 0.66%.
In the case of the murders, this is a homicide in Zarautz (Gipuzkoa) on 15 October, when a 47-year-old man killed his 53-year-old partner.
There have been three cases of homicide (domestic violence) committed inside the home.
The largest number of complaints of male violence have been reported by partners or ex-partners , 4,303.
The second area where most attacks on women occur is domestic, with 1,023 cases of domestic violence detected.
Withregard to sexual violence, the number has increased in the last two years, to 649 this year, 4.34 per cent more than last year.
