The future of the Guggenheim project for Urdaibai is about to be clarified
The time has come to know whether or not the Guggenheim Museum will be built in the Urdaibai region. This afternoon, at 5:00 p.m., the museum board will meet to make its decision.
The Board of Trustees consists of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, among others. When asked, most of the agents involved have been cautious and have asked to wait for the hearing process to be completed.
However, some of them have been instructed. The General Deputy of Bizkaia has spoken. At the plenary session of the General Policy of Bizkaia held last September, Elixabete Etxanobe warned of the difficulties ofmaking the project viable in the medium term.
In addition, the active listening process carried out among the citizens of the Busturialdea-Urdaibai region has also been affected. In July the first results were given by the Agirre Lehendakaria Center that has completed the process. According to the data collected so far, the location of themuseum at the site of the Murueta shipyard is not welcomed by most of the participants.
The final decision will be taken this afternoon at a meeting at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The Board is expected to consider suspending the museum project for the time being and the majority will support that decision.
