In the first quarter of 2026, Gipuzkoa will have a new pioneering service in Europe for the prevention, early detection and care of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. The Diputación Foral will launch this service in collaboration with the CITA Alzheimer's Foundation, which will be located in San Sebastián and which is intended to be a European benchmark for its innovative, preventive and Community approach.
The new resource, which will involve an investment of more than EUR 525,000, will be aimed at working in the early stages of cognitive impairment and at people with risk factors, and aims to delay the evolution of the disease, improve the quality of life, strengthen personal autonomy and provide specialized support and support to affected families.
The service is established as a community reference unit and will exceed the usual model of day centres, incorporating new forms of intervention, more specialized professionals and comprehensive care in coordination with prevention services, the health area and the family environment.
The project is led by CITA Alzheimer's and has the collaboration of foreign, health and social organizations, as well as Afai, which is the reference institution for family support.
